Morgan and Tara have returned to lush environs and are riding their horses filling in the plot when they meet up with a suspicious-looking Tyrannosaurus Rex. Morgan is unsaddled when his horse panics and Tara is forced to double Morgan. But before they can get very far, Tara’s horse breaks its leg in a gopher hole, throwing them to the ground. Instead of eating them, the dinosaur heads back into the jungle.

After Morgan puts the horse out of its misery, Morgan and Tara see that they stand in a wide track that has been laid bare, and it goes on into the distance, farther than they can see. The dinosaur had been afraid to venture into this wasteland.

Unbeknownst to them, an immense red sphere comes up behind them, travelling the track it has worn in surface of Skartaris. They wonder if it is a moon, but before they can try to figure it out, men on flying sleds emerge from it and swoop in, firing. Shadow goes down and before long Morgan and Tara join the dog in unconsciousness. Tractor beams from the flying sleds lift the trio and ferry them into the red sphere.

When they awake they find themselves aboard the starship from the planet Alces Shirasi, commanded by Bornaa. The starship and its crew are the last survivors of their billions-of-years-old civilisation. Their star system had gone nova. Bornaa’s plan is to intermix his race with the inhabitants of Skartaris through breeding, preserving his culture. Until now they had been mutating humans for breeding, but they are close to accomplishing breeding with unaltered humans, and Bornaa means to use Morgan and Tara, against their wills, to accomplish this.

Morgan springs into action, assaulting Bornaa, and they try to flee, but Bornaa traps them in a force field and Morgan ends up clamped into a machine. Since Morgan acts like a beast they will transmute him into one, and he is turned into a bull-headed monster. Bornaa drags Tara away. As he feels his rational mind slipping away, Morgan uses his added strength to break free.

Meanwhile, Bornaa is trying to make time with Tara. Seeming to go along with the seduction, she uses Bornaa’s lust against him and gets his gun and shoots him. Escaping, she finds Morgan attacking the crew. Tara stops him from killing the machine technician and Morgan is restored to his normal self shortly thereafter. They steal flying sleds and make their escape, but there will be no pursuit because the guards hit their ship’s reactor with weapons fire and the ship goes up in a fireball. eom
